Weed Wrench Opts Out
Not “Retiring” Or “Going Out of Business””
Word has been getting around that I am “retiring”; this is not true. I am quitting in disgust and sadness that the criminal entity I am paying taxes to is demonstrably not a legitimate government. This is the one means I have of legally striking back, by eliminating my income. This is a one-man general strike — all who wish to join me are welcome. My hope that we can stop the current lurch towards WWIII rises and falls each day.
An order came in recently with the note “We will miss you”. As much as I appreciate that sentiment, my first thought was “Not nearly as much as I miss my country”. Because I understand how slowly the wheels of history turn, I’m not expecting a restoration of the American Republic within a timeframe that would allow me, at my current age, to resume making Weed Wrenches. However, miracles have been known to happen and I would be delighted to help a new constitutional government get the economy moving again. In the meantime I have plenty of long-delayed projects to keep me busy, none of which will earn any taxable income. My whole life has been lived in the spirit of “voluntary simplicity”. Now I am simply moving on to full-blown “opt-out”.
I have talked to many customers about this in the last few months, and the feedback has been 100% supportive in spite of their disappointment. I have always found Weed Wrench customers to be more aware than average citizens, and now they are proving that again with their understanding. I regret the inconvenience I am causing to the people who need Weed Wrenches who won’t get them, and I regret the harm I will do to the businesses that I do business with at a time when they need every customer they can get. But without a free country to live in, none of this makes any difference anyway.
I have spent a lifetime reading history. If I have a special area of interest it would be WWII and the era leading up to it. We can see clearly in hindsight what steps were gone through to create the fascist police state and the counter-measures which the German people did not take to prevent it. We, the American people in 2013 cannot plead ignorance as we see our government taking the same series of steps. If we do not stop this, it will be to our nation’s eternal shame. — TN

The strengths of the four Weed Wrench models have been designed and extensively field tested so each model can uproot any plant up to its maximum jaw capacity without breaking. All materials and workmanship are guaranteed for normal usage. There are four ways we know of (explained in the user information sheet supplied with each tool) that an operator can damage the tool but all are easily avoided and all are fixable. In fact, the all-steel construction of Weed Wrench makes any conceivable damage fixable at any welding shop.
The following information will help you determine if Weed Wrench will work for you and to choose the optimum size for your needs.
Generally, Weed Wrench will uproot any plant if the jaws will fit around the stem, and the tensile strength of the stem or stems exceeds the anchoring strength of the roots.
It will work on
- virtually all woody plants. Jaw placement is easiest on straight vertical stems and becomes more problematic (but not impossible) on multi-stemmed plants or plants that lay flat against the ground.
- some herbaceous plants if the stem is fibrous and tough enough so the roots pull out before the stem is crushed to the breaking point.
- multi-stemmed plants so long as one stem or a bundle of stems can be gripped whose tensile strength exceeds root anchoring strength.
- previously cut off plants as long as a nub of the original stem is accessible.
- wooden tree stakes for re-use.
It will not work on
- soft-stemmed plants.
- plants which grow in a clump like pampas grass.
Some plants Weed Wrench has proven effective against include:
|buckthorn||multiflora rose||honeysuckle||Scotch broom|
|Russian Olive||willow||holly||Brazilian pepper|
Weed Wrench is usually used on plants where uprooting is a positive end to that plant. However, it may be useful for a first-round root removal of a plant like blackberry vine, as long as you understand that there will be follow-up work required as underground root runners send up new growth.
Choosing a Weed Wrench is determined by the maximum diameter of stem you will need to grip. The weight of the tool is an important consideration, and it is usually best to choose a size no larger than is necessary to get the job done. There are two exceptions to the largest-stem-diameter rule. One is if you will be pulling multi-stemmed shrubs, a larger jaw capacity can be useful for gripping bundles of stems. The other is when 95% of the stems you need to grip will fit in a smaller tool’s jaws and only the exceptional plant exceeds that capacity, you may find it preferable to use a lighter model and deal with the exception by some other removal method.
On the other hand, you may like a tool that never takes “no” for an answer. Larger Weed Wrench models have more leverage and pulling power; if the weight doesn’t bother you, you may prefer using one that makes your average target plant jump out of the ground effortlessly. In our experience on volunteer teams, the “heavy” model is best run by larger persons or at least persons with plenty of spunk. The “medium” model can be handled quite well by persons of ordinary strength and stature. The “light” model is easy and fun to use by anyone, including children, while still having an impressive capacity. Of the four models, the larger three are stand-up tools with a jaw-catch feature which holds the jaw open during placement around stems. The “mini” model must be operated from a squatting, kneeling, or sitting position and therefore has no jaw catch feature as it is easier to hold the jaw open by hand. For prolonged use of the “mini” we recommend our “Toadstool” outdoor work seat, a one-legged stool that makes ground-level work much more comfortable. All Weed Wrench sizes have jaws that will close to zero, so they will uproot anything from their maximum jaw capacity down to the smallest plant.
