How do breeders create new cannabis strains?

Crossing male and female plants of different strains is how new cannabis strains are created. If the breeding is done carefully the best characteristics (yield, potency, aroma, taste etc) of the parent varieties are passed on to the offspring. The new strain can then be stabilised over several generations of backcrossing. From this new strain you can create feminised seeds and autoflowering cannabis seeds.

What are F1 cannabis genetics?

F1 cannabis genetics means they are first generation from a cross of two parents. When one F1 plant is bred with another brother/sister (from the same batch) an F2 is created. With some poly hybrids, the best cannabis seed producers can require up to 10 generations (F10) before the cannabis genetics are regarded as fully stable and viewed as an inbred line (‘IBL’). This is because the parent genetics contain initially high levels of divergent characteristics which take longer to fully stabilise. The amount of breeding required to create an IBL depends on the genetics being worked with. For example with some stable landrace strains an F5 may well be stable enough to be considered an IBL.
