Sea of Green (SOG) – Harvest more, faster

Growing cannabis is surprisingly simple: all you need are a few seeds, pots, water and light. If, however, you want to maximise yields and also save time, you will do best with a Sea of Green. No other growing approach will allow you to harvest so much in so little time.

The pioneering spirit of the Dutch is the stuff of legends. Want some examples? The telescope and the microscope, stock exchanges, Fairtrade, CD’s, Bluetooth are all Dutch inventions. It was also the Dutch who developed a new way of growing cannabis in the 1970s, which would change commercial growing forever.

We are talking about the Sea of Green method, which combines two major benefits: maximum yields and minimum time invested. Sound too good to be true? Not at all! With a few simple tips, any keen gardener can successfully grow cannabis.

Sea of Green

The cultivation of cannabis indoors presents the grower with the same challenge every time: how do you make best use of the (limited) space available and how do you ensure that the plants get as much light as possible? The answer: Sea of Green.

This approach to cultivation uses a lot of small plants, instead of a few large plants. The growth phase is deliberately kept short, so that the space is completely filled and the light efficiency can be maximised.

Which cannabis varieties are suitable for a Sea of Green?

It is important to use a suitable variety of cannabis and the best idea is to use clones from a single parent plant. This will ensure that the plants all grow in the same way. Growing identical plants for a short period is the main key to success with a Sea of Green.

If you prefer to use cannabis seeds, then make sure they are all of the same variety. Sativas tend to grow too lanky and would impinge on the other plants, but Indicas are more suitable.

The following varieties are particularly appropriate for use as a Sea of Green: Super Skunk, Afghani #1, Hindu Kush and because it is very robust, the classic Northern Lights as well.

Auto-flowering cannabis varieties shift automatically to the flowering stage within a few weeks of germination. They are a popular choice for a SOG. On the other hand, auto-flowering seeds tend to develop a branch structure with a wide reach. In addition, because of their Ruderalis genes, they will never develop buds as large and potent as those from seasonal cannabis.

Going from growth to flowering phase

The ideal pot size is around 15 cm, holding 4 to 6 litres. This means the plants will be fully mature at a height of 30 to 50 cm.

Anyone living in a small apartment, or working with a Micro Grow Setup, will understand the benefits offered by only needing a small vertical space. Experienced growers can even use shelves to stack several growing levels on top of each other.

A common mistake is to assume that the pots need to be placed as close together as possible. This creates a seamless plant surface area, which initially sounds like a great idea. But what this actually means is that the plants are competing directly with each other, with the result that they try to outgrow each other. This “jungle effect” causes stress for the plants, which in turn leads to less biomass or less bud formation.

It is better if the plants do not initially touch each other. The ideal timing for a Sea of Green is not during the first one or two weeks of the vegetation phase, but instead from about the fourth week of the bud formation.

Once the plants begin to grow visibly and the first leaves have appeared, then the seedling phase is over.

Opinions differ as to how long the vegetation phase should last. There are growers who trigger the flowering phase after just a few days, but it is better to wait 10 to 14 days before doing so. The plants are still very young at this point.

If you then change the light cycle to 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness, the plants will devote all their energy to creating one main bud. Now is the time to check that the light sources are hanging high enough to avoid creating any hot spots. Incorrectly placing the lamps is one of the most common errors in the cultivation of cannabis.

Uniformity is the answer

Proper care is everything when it comes to successful SOG cultivation. All the plants must be treated equally. This applies to the lighting and supply of nutrients, as well as watering and pruning. Drip systems have proven useful, because they ensure that all plants receive the same quantities of water and nutrients.

It is worth carefully pruning the plants during both the vegetation and flowering stages. If you remove the lower branches, then the plants have more energy to put into forming buds. The goal is for the plants to put all their energy into forming the main bud.

Superfluous leaves and spindly side branches should be removed during the flowering phase. A welcome side effect of this is that it improves the circulation of air.

Important: Great care must be taken with any intervention on growing plants! If you remove too many leaves or branches at once, you run the risk of the plants going into shock and ceasing to grow normally, or producing fewer buds.

The Sea of Green (SOG) method: No other cultivation method leads to such a rapid cannabis harvest. It takes many, small plants, little space, proper care and following the useful tips in this article! Learn which cannabis varieties to use best and how to avoid the most common mistakes.

Sea of Green Growing Method (SOG)

The SOG, (Sea of Green) is a technique whose objective is to reduce the growing time of your Cannabis plants as much as possible, but don’t the Cannabis plants have a natural development time? Yes, and I recommend that you respect it, since the quality of the harvest depends on it, but unfortunately, many times you don’t have all the time your varieties need, and that’s why the SOG cultivation technique was created, so widespread nowadays.

The application of the SOG technique uses neither chemicals nor additives, and basically what it allows you to have as many plants as possible within a small space, in which under normal conditions it would be unthinkable.

SOG cultivation is the perfect solution for all those who cannot grow their crops outdoors and have to do so in an indoor growing cabinet, having to stick to the space they have, so quiet, because you can get in less time and space, more production with your SOG type crop. How do you apply the SOG cultivation method? I’ll explain it to you later.

⭐ What is the SOG culture?

Previously we have seen, which are the objectives and reasons why you should opt for a SOG crop, it’s the best indoor growing method if you want fast results, although the sea of green growing technique is also frequently used outdoors. Let’s go to what concerns us, and that is that in order to be able to do it correctly it is necessary to know all the details.

The SOG is a horizontal intensive cultivation system, which consists of creating a kind of ‘green carpet’ with as many plants as possible, uniform and homogeneous. To achieve this we place them side by side, you will not need to leave space between them because the plant will end up becoming a single central bud.

Then keep in mind that with a couple of weeks of growth you will have enough before you move on to flowering

For the plants to acquire the same size in SOG crops, it is advisable to use cuttings from the mother plant you have grown in the closet, and select the healthiest and strongest, although if you find this difficult you can always use seeds from a reputable bank as these usually produce more homogeneous plants.

Cultivating in the SOG system brings you multiple benefits, time savings, increased production and reduced energy costs..

👾 Step-by-step guide to how to do a SOG culture

I’m going to teach you the best sea of green setup, with this growing guide:

1- Setting up the SOG cultivation zone

The first step, without a doubt, to be able to carry out your SOG cultivation, is to measure the space you have available. To give you an idea when it comes to measuring, SOG crops usually hold 20 Sativas or 25 Indicas per m2, and I thought it was an outrage too, but believe me when I say that they fit and that, after an initial investment a little higher in plants, you will get a production that will draw an incredible smile on your face.

Once you have determined your growing space, you must take the lighting system into account, choosing a powerful light that covers the entire growing area to affect the entire SOG crop equally. I usually use a 600W HPS bulb in my 1.2 x 1.2 meter SOG crop, but to give you an idea of the scale used, a 250W bulb covers 0.5m2 and a 400W bulb covers 1m2.

If you want to take your SOG crop to the next level, LEC lighting technology is your solution. Something more expensive to start with, but which will reduce your energy costs in the medium term.

Another factor to take into account, and very important is the irrigation, I recommend that you install an automatic irrigation system, because with so many plants is ideal and all will be watered equally.

2- Make the cuttings and make the selection of the most outstanding ones

The SOG technique with seeds is possible, but it will make you lose a little time in germination, so it is usually done with cuttings, because this way the plants will grow uniformly, while, if you grow SOG crops from seeds, it is possible that some grow taller than others and there will be plants that will not receive the light that touches.

The cuttings should come from the same variety and if possible from the same mother plant, so that the results are absolutely perfect. Select the ones that appear to be healthier and stronger, as well as a higher amount than necessary in case you fail. Follow my advice and you will enjoy a very effective SOG culture.

3- Planting and caring for cuttings

Once you have selected your cuttings, get ready to plant them, and to do this you will need a good root stimulant, Canna Rhizotonic or Root It Gel will make your cuttings take root quickly and strongly.

The beginnings are always complicated, and at the beginning the cuttings will be a little fragile and you will have to give them the appropriate pampering, you will have to start watering them little by little, keeping the substrate at 50-70% dry, making occasional exchanges between humidity and dryness to stimulate growth.

To control the growth of the cuttings and the quality of the SOG crop, you transplant the cuttings from small pots of about 0.25 L to larger ones. For example, SOG coco cultivation would require pots of about 3 litres, while SOG soil cultivation would require final pots of between 5 and 6 litres.

4- Controlling growth

The first two weeks are the key, remember that the aim of any SOG crop is that the plant does not grow too much, so put them in flowering phase as soon as possible. In the case of Indicas varieties, 10 days of growth are needed and in Sativas 14.

In these first days it will be necessary to put the focus very low, so that they do not glean, with a system of illumination 18/6 and I recommend that you make rotation so that all grow equally.

During this stage water your pots every 2 days, adding growth stimulants.

5- We pass the cuttings to the flowering cupboard

When you see that the plants reach between 25-30 cm, that’s when you have to pass them to flowering, because in no case have to exceed 50 cm at the most for the cultivation of SOG is profitable. To start the flowering stage change to a 12/12 lighting system.

During the flowering period, you should prune, but focusing on the lower branches, which are those that prevent light from entering clearly, so the concentration of buds will be at the points where they perceive more light and where they acquire their greatest expression. Never trim the top unless you’ve gotten lost, so we recommend that you keep track of your SOG crop.

Also use stimulators and flowering fertilizers, such as Bud Ignitor from Advanced Nutrients, a true wonder that will certainly help your plant bloom as a true champion.

6- Harvest and enjoy

After this care, comes the best time and the one you’ve been waiting for, to harvest your crop. All you need to do is one last root wash to remove all traces of fertilizer and simply enjoy! You will get surprised by the sea of green yield per plant!?
