Plant Sizes

Our plants may be available in one or more of the following sizes, and sold by one or more nurseries.

32-Count Deep Plugs

Our 32-count plugs are typically the preferred size for plants that are shallow-rooted. The additional width of these plugs allows for horizontal growth of the roots, which benefits many species of ferns and sedges.

Each individual plug measures 2 ½” x 2 ½” across by 3” deep.

These plugs are landscape-ready, but also offer a head start should you be interested in potting them up.

50-Count Deep Plugs

Plugs refer to small containers, typically attached to one another to form trays, and are used in the early development stage of growing out plants.

This size plug is 2” x 2” across, and 5” deep. This allows for a large plant – up to 16” tall depending on the species and time of year – with a well established mature, deep root system.

50-Count Regular Plugs

Our regular 50-count plugs are an excellent, economical choice for starter plants that do no produce exceptionally broad or deep root systems.

Each individual plug measures 1 ¾” x 1 ¾” across by 2 ½” deep.

These plugs are landscape-ready, but also offer a head start should you be interested in potting them up.

Our 72-count plugs are economical landscaping plugs. Each individual plug measures 1 ⅔” x 1 ⅔” across by 2 ⅓” deep.

The plants are well-rooted and have the advantage of shipping during an aggressive growth stage.

Whether you intend to pot them up, or put them in the ground, they will establish faster and with less maintenance than just about any other size available.

This size is well-suited for plants in an advanced stage of development. Each quart is about 4” x 4” and 5” deep (exact measurements vary slightly depending on the pot manufacturer).

Whether you are interested in growing a specimen, or creating a grouping, these plants will be quick to establish and put on a show.

Actual pot size is 3.5” x 3.5” x 3.5”. This is a good transitional size for plants that do not have deep tap roots. They are more mature than plugs, but younger and more economical than plants offered in quarts.

18-Count RootMaker® Tray

These 18-count RootMaker® trays are specifically designed for woody plants that require excellent drainage and staggered, air-pruned root systems. They result in healthy plants that are not pot-bound, and are ready to be transplanted directly into native soil.

Each individual cell measures 3 ⅛” x 3 ⅛” across by 4”deep.

Our 4 ounce seed mixes and contain enough seed to cover up to 500 sq ft. The seed mix includes a seasonally appropriate cover crop and seed carrier. The carrier helps with seed dispersal and the cover crop is an annual species that will help to suppress weeds while your seeds are germinating. Each mix includes 10 to 17 species of natives; the percentage of each species is listed in the description tab on each seed mix page.

Seeds can be an economical way of propagating your own native plants.

Depending on the species, our seed packets contain between 15 to 900 seeds. The approximate seed count is listed in the “Pricing and Availability” tab on each species page.
