Forecast Discussion:

PM2.5 (fine particulate matter) levels are high Valley-wide this morning. The inversion, a layer of warm air just above the ground, is holding smoke from holiday-related fireworks and/or fireplace usage near the ground. You may notice a haze (very distinguishable on ADEQ’s visibility webcams) and may even be able to smell smoke in the air.

Unfortunately, PM2.5 levels were high enough in Phoenix before midnight to push the Air Quality Index (AQI) into the Unhealthy category yesterday. And at least one PM2.5 monitor (West Phoenix) is on track to reach the Very Unhealthy category today. The good news however is that the inversion will begin to lift as the day warms up–this will allow smoke to disperse from the ground and cause PM2.5 levels to decrease.

Looking ahead, not much is expected to change weather-wise over the next several days. In general, calm and cool conditions will continue each day, with highs in the mid-60s and lows in the mid-40s. Occasional high-level clouds may pass overhead too. Unfortunately, no rain is in the forecast for a while; and our next chance at decent winds (which would help to clear out our air) is not until Tuesday.

In terms of air quality, the calm and cool weather conditions will continue to be favorable for the local build-up of PM2.5 during this period.

PM2.5 and PM10 High Pollution Advisories are still in effect for today. We will also extend the PM2.5 High Pollution Advisory into Saturday, taking into account the potential for carryover from today.

On Sunday, PM2.5 levels are expected to be elevated in the overnight hours again. But by the beginning of the next work week, both PM10 and PM2.5 should return to more typical weekday patterns.
