General information Amsterdam Coffeeshops
In the Netherlands the law upholds a policy of tolerance when it comes to cannabis usage. This means that any person over the age of 18 can buy up to 5 grams of cannabis in authorized cannabis café’s, or “coffeeshops” as the Dutch call them. The sale, and usage of marijuana and hash is allowed only at these locations and the police will not take any action. There was a rumor that foreigners would not be allowed in these establishments anymore as of 2013, but the government has decided to pass of the idea and residents as well as non-residents are allowed to purchase and use soft drugs like marijuana and hashies.
Coffee shops are being held under strict regulations in the Netherlands and the government will not hesitate to close a shop down when these rules are being broken.

Coffee Shops in Amsterdam
Amsterdam is known worldwide for its coffeeshops and the city hosts over 220 coffeeshops. Have a look at our Amsterdam coffeeshop map to see where they are situated. There are many different kinds of coffeeshops just as there are many different kinds of bars and café’s. Some are more like you typical Rastafari place with Bob Marley displaced on the walls everywhere you look, some more general touristy, some authentic Dutch, some super loud and crowded, there is one shop dedicated to the Doors, some are really small and quietly hidden in local neighborhoods, there are some very trippy places with blue lights and psychedelic drawings on the walls and so on…
Each of these coffee shops has their own menu and selection of grass, hash, pre-rolled joints and sometimes a nice menu of edibles like space-cake or hash brownies. There are thousands of different varieties of cannabis available and prices vary. Each shop has its own pricing. You pay a bit more in the center of Amsterdam especially in places that are basically meant for tourism. The general prices range from about €6,- (£5.13) to €11,- (£9.41) for a gram of weed or hash. Pre-rolled joints cost about €2.50 (£2.14). Rolling papers you can always buy in any coffee shop and most of them have some on the bar for free. In some coffee shops, like the Grey Area shop, you can borrow a vaporizer to smoke your marijuana. As this is basically the cleanest way to smoke you herbs, it is really worth a try!
The better coffee shops are cheaper, have a better selection, friendlier staff, nicer snacks, and better music. We attempted to find a few for you. Hard work but somebody had to do it.
