I use medical marijuana to treat my insomnia, and the first time I tried it went terribly wrong
I’m not a fan of pot.
I have shared a toke with friends a few times over the years, but I don’t like to smoke. And I’m already paranoid, so weed seems superfluous.
But the recent explosion of the marijuana industry, especially in my home state of California, along with countless testimonials about the medical properties of cannabis made me want to give medical marijuana a try.
About three years ago, I decided to get a medical marijuana card to see if cannabis could help my chronic insomnia.
And on my first trip, I got more than I bargained for.
First, I had to get approved for medical marijuana and learn the risks
Recreational cannabis has been legal in California since 2018. But, before that, the bar to get a medical marijuana card was very low. If you could afford the “doctor” visit and the cost of the card — about $60 a year — you were in.
I knew about the risks before I went to get my card. I had read New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd’s account of her downward spiral after she ate a whole cannabis-infused chocolate bar. The doctor who gave me the prescription added a warning about edibles and dosing, but I shrugged her off. I knew that, all right? I was a savvy and educated cannabis consumer.
Except that I actually didn’t know much about marijuana on that first day.
My new medical marijuana ID card was my ticket to entry at a nearby cannabis club (no admittance without the card; all sales in cash). I discussed my situation with the young man behind the counter. He told me there were two types of weed: indica and sativa . He said that indica affected your body and sativa affected your brain, so indica would be the right strain to help me sleep. I bought the high-THC indica tincture he recommended and went on my way.
My experience that night ended in misery
Before I went to bed that night, I took what I thought was a half dose. I didn’t feel particularly sleepy, but I was hopeful the tincture would help me stay asleep. I drifted off.
In the middle of the night, I woke up because the bed was tilting. I felt dizzy lying down. I had extreme cotton mouth — there was not a drop of moisture between my lips. I was queasy. I felt just as bad when I got up as I did when I was lying down. There was nothing I could do to make the bad trip stop.
My saving grace that night was a story a friend had told me. She’d gone to a fancy dinner that came with a cannabis pairing. In the middle of the meal, she started to feel like she was falling down a deep well. She had to leave the dinner and she was a wreck the next day, but her only lasting ill effect was embarrassment.
As I lay in bed, queasy and off-balance, I thought, “This will pass.” I knew I just had to wait it out. I wasn’t going to die from a marijuana overdose .
I slept in fits and starts. By morning, I still felt pretty rotten, so I called in sick to work. By the end of the day, I didn’t feel ill anymore, just stupid.
I’ve moved on to other methods now
I never touched that indica tincture again. After my bad trip, just riding my bike past the dispensaries in Oakland, where the smell of weed hung heavy in the air, made me feel slightly queasy.
But I didn’t give up on medical marijuana — I just started trying other methods. Now, CBD ointment can give me instant pain relief when I have an ache. And I found a cannabis mint with a much lower dose of THC that helps me sleep
There’s now a cannabis club two blocks from my house. I don’t need a medical card to buy cannabis, since it became fully legal in California last year. But three years after my first experience with medical marijuana, I have a healthy respect for the power of a concentrated dose of THC.
Despite taking less than a full dosage, I had a terrible time my first night using medical marijuana.

Medical Pot May Help Many Battle Insomnia, Pain and Stress: Study

FRIDAY, June 26, 2020 (HealthDay News) — More and more U.S. states are allowing marijuana to be taken as medicine, and a new study suggests that users do indeed feel better.
In a survey of nearly 1,300 people with chronic health conditions, researchers found that those using “medicinal cannabis” reported less pain, better sleep and reduced anxiety.
They also tended to use fewer prescription medications and were less likely to have been to the hospital recently.
A majority of U.S. states have made marijuana legal for medical or recreational use, and studies have looked at whether those laws are linked to increased marijuana use, car accidents or emergency room visits.
But little research has examined the impact of legalization on the people who use medicinal cannabis, said senior study author Ryan Vandrey, an associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.
The finding that cannabis users felt better than nonusers is not necessarily surprising, according to Vandrey. But it’s important to demonstrate it in a study, he said.
The results do not prove, however, that medicinal cannabis is effective. It’s also unclear whether certain products were linked to particular benefits.
Medicinal cannabis included not only formulations of THC — the chemical behind marijuana’s “high” — but also cannabidiol, or CBD, which does not create a high. Fifty-eight percent of users were taking “CBD-dominant” oils, tinctures and other products.
CBD has exploded in popularity across the United States in recent years, and is marketed in everything from oils and capsules to cookies and coffee. The purported benefits are also wide-ranging, and include relief from chronic pain, anxiety and insomnia.
But nearly all of those claims are untested, said Richard Miller, a professor of pharmacology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.
CBD has been shown to improve certain rare seizure disorders, he noted. In 2018, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Epidiolex — a purified, pharmaceutical-grade CBD — for those conditions.
“But all of the other 10,000 things CBD is supposed to do? We have no idea,” Miller said. “I think the vast majority of it is b.s.”
That said, cannabis clearly does have some medicinal use, according to Miller.
“With respect to humanity’s experience with cannabis,” he said, “people have taken it medicinally for thousands of years.” It was only in the last century that marijuana prohibition took hold — making those years “the anomaly,” Miller said.
The new findings, published recently in the journal Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, are based on responses from 808 cannabis users and 468 “controls.” All had chronic health conditions — most often neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis or epilepsy; chronic pain; or psychiatric conditions such as depression or anxiety.
All were seeking information from a nonprofit on medical marijuana use; people in the control group were not using cannabis but were considering it.
Overall, the study found, cannabis users scored a little lower on standard scales rating pain severity and anxiety and depression. They also reported better sleep quality.
More striking, Vandrey said, was the fact that cannabis users needed less health care: They were 46% less likely to have been hospitalized in the prior month, and 39% less likely to have visited an ER. And in their day-to-day lives, they tended to use fewer prescription medications — an average of 14% fewer.
Jane Allen, an analyst with the research institute RTI International in North Carolina, called the study’s recruitment strategy a limitation. Since participants consulted the nonprofit, they likely had “positive perceptions” about cannabis from the start, she said.
“The study would be stronger and less susceptible to bias if recruitment had been through a cannabis-neutral channel,” Allen said.
To Vandrey, the findings highlight the need for researchers to dig deeper into medicinal cannabis. Studies need to look, for example, at individual health conditions and the effects of a given CBD or THC product, he said.
“If we’re going to legalize cannabis to be used as medicine,” Vandrey said, “then we need to better understand how to use it as medicine.”
Miller agreed. He said the new findings “add to the flow of data” that medicinal cannabis has benefits — but the specifics remain unclear.
The study also found that only 27% of cannabis users said they were doing so under a doctor’s recommendation.
That’s concerning, according to Vandrey. “So who is recommending it to them?” he said. “And are their doctors aware they’re using it?”
For one, he noted, there’s increasing evidence that cannabinoids can interact with certain medications.
Vandrey suggested that if people are interested in using cannabis for medical reasons, they talk to their doctor. And do the research: “See if there’s evidence of safety and efficacy for your health condition,” he said.
