In Honor of 4/20, Two Magical Edible Recipes From The Green Fairy
For a certain sect, the 20th of April is an important national holiday. Some even take the day off in order to ensure that they’re available to commemorate the holiday’s main ritual, which, naturally, takes place at precisely 4:20 p.m.
Though the history of this heady day—like so many other counterculture references—is a bit murky, legend has it that the phrase “420” was originally police code for “Marijuana Smoking in Progress.” Other rumors state that it all started (where else?) in a parking lot before a Grateful Dead show.
Whatever the origins, one thing’s for sure: The phrase “420” and its meaning are an indelible part of the pop culture and our collective lexicon. In honor of this special day, we’ve asked an expert in the matter, The Green Fairy, to share some of her favorite celebratory recipes. If you’ve never eaten or cooked like this before, our fairy has some advice: “Surround yourself with good vibes, good friends, good food, and maybe an app for a cab ride home. There’s nothing stopping you from having the time of your life. If at any point you feel overwhelmed, insecure, or a bit paranoid, remind yourself that this is a new experience and you are in control of your mind. Embrace the weird and ride the wave.”
Sound advice for life in general, we say. Here, two delicious and easy recipes, plus one for making your own herb-infused butter.

“I love everything about this recipe,” says The Green Fairy. “These cashews are relatively simple and quick, are sweet and savory, and high in protein. The flavor is fresh, well-balanced, and extremely addicting. I’ve had to limit this one to special occasion because I physically cannot restrain myself from eating the entire batch. Full disclosure: Nuts are a sustainable source of energy and therefore may lead to a longer euphoric feeling.”
3 T fresh rosemary, chopped 2 cups cashews 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper 2 T The Green Fairy’s butter 1/4 cup dark brown sugar 4 tsp. Celtic sea salt
- Chop the fresh rosemary.
- Roast cashews in the oven at 225 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes.
- On low heat, combine all ingredients in a saucepan.
- Stir continuously for 3 to 5 minutes.
- 1 serving = 14–17 mg.

“The concept of combining an herbal, more sedative ingredient alongside a traditional energy booster is my personal favorite element of this recipe. Playing with the balance of highs and lows within your body’s response to food is like a way of designing or curating your own physical inner vibration. That and, of course ,the gorgeous green glow of the frosting,” explains The Green Fairy. “This recipe is best saved for a day brunch or midday ‘high’ tea.”
2 sticks softened butter 1 T The Green Fairy’s butter 1 tsp. Madagascar vanilla bean extract 1 tsp. almond extract 1 cup dark chocolate baking chips 1 1/2 cups sugar 5 large eggs 1/2 tsp. salt
2 sticks butter 2 cups powdered sugar 1 T The Green Fairy’s butter 2 packets cream cheese 1/2 tsp. The Green Fairy’s Madagascar vanilla bean extract 1/2 tsp. The Green Fairy’s almond extract 1/2 tsp. Celtic sea salt 2 T organic matcha powder
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Beat the butters and extracts in a large mixing bowl for 1 minute.
- In a separate bowl, temper the chocolate in the microwave in 10-second increments.
- Mix sugar into chocolate once at room temperature, beat eggs in, one at a time.
- Mix until smooth, then pour into three 8-inch pans.
- Bake for 25 minutes, rotating the pans every 7 minutes.
- Let cakes cool for 30 minutes, then carefully remove from pans and place top side down into parchment paper.
- Lay cakes flat in refrigerator until well-chilled.
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the butters together then carefully add remaining ingredients.
- Gradually increase speed for 5 to 7 minutes until fluffy.
- Frost the cake and garnish.
- Proceed with caution.
- Yields 35 servings, at 14 mg per slice.
“There are many ways to prepare butter, oils, and tincture infusions. Some take less than an hour, while others take up to three days. The difference between methods is in potency and yield in proportion to how much of the active compound is absorbed into the fat content or binding agent being used. The active compound is activated by heat, and once activated or ‘turned on’ it can be used as an addition to any of your favorite recipes. Always be aware of portion sizing, however! Ten milligrams per person is my suggestion for an appropriate dose.“
Yields 60 Servings (10 mg/tsp.)
Supplies: 1/4 cup ground or finely chopped herb 1/2 cup butter Metal strainer / coffee filter / cheesecloth Mason jar with sealed lid
- Using a double boiler or a small saucepan, melt the butter on low heat. Slowly mix in the greens, stirring frequently. Small bubbles at the edges will start to form, be sure to scrape the sides and continue mixing on and off for 45 minutes.
- Remove from heat and allow to cool for 10 minutes, and continue to stir. Place the strainer of your choice over the opening of the mason jar, and pour the mixture through the strainer into the jar. Squeeze any excess butter through the top of the strainer and discard the extracted greens. This straining process can be done 2 to 3 times depending on how clear you would like your extract to be.
- Seal with lid and immediately chill in the refrigerator.
